Ta-ta, Taiwan!

After a month of being immersed in Taiwanese culture, I’m proud to say that I’m no longer a “dumb American tourist” (well, at least not in Taiwan).

I must say, I’ve had a wonderful time. The people are incredibly kind and friendly, the food is delicious, and our host family was amazing. They even included us in their celebration of Chinese New Year.

There’s no countdown to midnight, but rather a quiet gathering with close family and a feast of delicious Taiwanese cuisine. Red envelopes with money are exchanged, wine is drunk, and laughs are shared.

Before the big day, people flood Taipei’s local flower market to purchase decorations and gifts.

So what happens on Chinese New Year's Day?

Asian fast food!

Along with Chinese New Year traditions, I’ve picked up all sorts of fun facts about life in Taiwan.

Healthcare is required for all Taiwanese citizens, each of whom have their entire medical history on a readable card. For foreigners, services are quite cheap. Here’s me getting my teeth cleaned for only $26!

Taipei has a city-wide bike rental service called “U-bike”. With a simple swipe of a card, you’re free to ride! Just return it to any U-bike locker when finished. Very popular in Taipei!

Taipei has a "Museum of Bad Art"

3d Art Show...not as "bad" as I had anticipated.

Unlike the US, where “gluten-free” is a prominent diet and health trend, Taiwan seems to be a fan of gluten.

For example, this is “gluten-ball soup”.

Not bad, not bad..

Light your lantern!

Outside Taipei, it’s popular to paint paper lanterns and let them fly into the night sky. You can paint pictures, or write your wishes and dreams. Let the lantern fly, and your wish will come true!

Finally, our host family thought it would be perfect to end our stay in Taiwan with a trip to the Confucius Temple. His teachings are extremely influential in Taiwanese culture.

Last of all, I must give a special thanks to this incredible family:

Their generosity and compassion is exceptional, and I can’t imagine being in Taiwan without them. From feeding us everyday to taking us to the dentist, they were truly amazing!

Thank you!

Well, it’s Bali-time! I have a beach to get to…
